I’m happy to start off the New Year with three of my paintings included in the group art exhibition, Small Works 2022 – New Beginning at the Upstream Gallery in Hastings on Hudson, NY – from January 6th through January 30th, 2022.
The theme, New Beginning, spoke to me for a number of reasons, as I described in my submission statement:
Lorie Caval “Newfound Abstraction”: Most of my work is figurative, done in oil, on medium-sized canvas – I occasionally make smaller works in acrylic. I was drawn to this show’s theme, New Beginning, firstly because so much has changed during the pandemic, I think everyone has experienced having to start over in one way or another. Secondly, I am a recent graduate of an Arts Administration MA program, now experiencing a career transition. And lastly, as a painter, after taking a long time to complete my last, very detailed oil painting, I have found something new in creating these smaller, vibrantly colored, abstract paintings. These three untitled paintings were a joy to create because I didn’t plan or worry about the outcome, I just had fun using intuition to paint one stroke after the other.
Here is a bit about Upstream Gallery: A contemporary cooperative art gallery founded in 1991, located in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, representing work by two dozen accomplished artists from around the region, working in a variety of media. (For more info on Upstream, see their website.)
Regarding the New Beginnings exhibition, Upstream has posted a photo album of all of the installed works, which you can see on their FaceBook page.
